The last time I bought a mattress was in 2001 and it was an IKEA cotton futon. I have had this coiled futon mattress for almost two months. It did arrive ingeniously rolled up in a large duffel bag and was quite heavy ( 60 lbs. I believe). I had to cut it open. When folded in couch position it buckles at the crease and juts out taking up seat room which is not comfortable. It is thick and springy and would probably be comfortable to lay on if not for the fumes. It has a very toxic smell but the directions say wait a few days for the "new" smell to air out. I opened the window in the room it's in. A few weeks go by I decide to have a seat on it. Good Lord, the fumes!
So I keep airing it out and turn it over. I can't even be in the room it's in for too long (the living room where the T.V. is). I have had the window open since the end of September and a fan pointed at the mattress along with cups of vinegar in the room to try and absorb the smell. I sit in a chair to watch a bit of T.V sometimes and I get a heavy feeling in my kidneys and eventually inability to breath. I have sat on this mattress THREE times for a matter of minutes because of the smell. December is approaching and it is not practical to have the windows open and closing the windows would mean compromising air quality. It is useless to me.
Amazon should put in the description of mattresses being sold the composition and a warning that since July 2007 federal law requires all mattresses to be fire retardant. Some people may not be chemically/fume sensitive but this can still have an effect on your body. After researching to find out if others have a problem such as this I find out that mattresses, especially foam ones, are known for high amount of toxic fumes and some have had health issues. The emission of these fumes from the fire retardant chemicals used is called "out gassing".
The return window ended for me October 31st and it would be a heinous and likely impossible task for me to package it up and send. I'm giving my UPS man a big tip this year for lugging this monster out his truck and up to my apartment. I want it out but it's too heavy for me to barely turn it let alone lug it down the steps outside. I may have to hack it up to get it out. I paid $162.22 for the mattress. Please Google "toxic mattress fumes", "mattress out gassing", and the like. Check out this video from a CBS report [...] on the YouTube channel bobspantsonfire.
If you are pregnant or value your health I would not buy this mattress.
I contacted the company, Ameriwood Industries to find out the composition ( see below) and chemicals used on the mattress, however I am now waiting on a response on which chemicals they used in their flame retardant.

This amazingly comfortable mattress comes SUPER shrink-wrapped and packed in a duffel bag type thing, but don't treat the duffel bag gently, trying to slide it down the mattress like I did. Doy! Rubbed my fingers raw trying to keep the bag in tact! Not a good idea. Just tear (or cut) one end open and keep ripping...sacrifice that neat-looking bag because inside that nut is a very comfortable futon mattress.
We use our futon mostly as a couch and despite some of the reviewers saying it's not good for couch-sitting or for even folding into a couch, all I can say is that's not my experience. Very comfortable as a couch (it's 8 inches thick!) and easy as pie to make it a couch. It folds just like any other futon mattress (inner-spring or not). Perhaps the caveat is that you must lay the futon flat like a bed first and then fold it, instead of folding the mattress first and trying to place it on an already folded futon frame. But why you would do that, I don't know.
Couldn't recommend it more. Very nice product.

This is product is great. I feels like a regular mattress. My oldest daugher has a futon in her room and her mattress does not compare to this one. Great product for such a low price. The only con is that it have a slight odor when you first get it. The manufacturer states the odor goes away within 2 days. I am very pleased with this purchase
